Managing grief with Self-Care 


The staff members and partitioners at TelepsycRX understand the pain and grief that comes with loss. We understand that everyone grieves differently and there is no “right way” to grieve. We have compiled a listed here of several ways that might help you, or a loved one deal with their grief.


The first and most important thing it so make sure you are taking care of yourself! Your physical health, hygiene and appearance can have a large impact on your mental health, and vice versa. If you take the time to care for your health and appearance, you can and will feel better about yourself, just as not doing so can lead you into depression or despair.


Make sure you are eating right. Don’t overindulge on comfort food, but make sure you are getting your daily caloric and nutritional requirements. I know it’s cliché, but make sure you drink plenty of water and try to get at least 6 hours of sleep… but not more than 12 each day. If you are having trouble getting to sleep, try exercising to burn off some of that extra energy.


It goes without saying that you should avoid alcohol or using illicit drugs to numb your grief or lift your spirits. These activities are highly addictive and can cause a grieving person to spiral out of control. Try to stay interested in hobbies and express your grief though creative outlets. Having a routine that consists of things you enjoy can help alleviate the pain of grief, while helping you stay connected with your friends. Also, be aware of things that might trigger your grief, like anniversaries or locations. These triggers can bring back painful memories, opening old wounds. Make sure you face these trigger events with a friend or speak about them with your support network, don’t isolate yourself… lean on your support for comfort.


Grief is a very personal experience, that affects everyone differently. Remember you are not alone and that while holding a loved one in your heart honors them, you don’t have to hold on to the pain. Take care of yourself and let others take care of you.
